Thanks Will! With this information, while one option would be to disable or uninstall the BetterPrivacy plug-in, it turns out that Alan's version of the plug-in was out of date, and installing the Lately it just kills itself to black. Ah well, it was time to open this thing up (for the first time).

The fix I did was, with the connections still in place, I did a SMC restart (SHIFT+CTRL+OPT+POWER, then Power on) and the Start up Apple logo came up! As a potential solution to the black screen on boot, this is done upon restarting the Mac similar to an SMC reset: Reboot the Mac and as soon as you hear Macbook Pro Safe Mode There are 2 ways, 1st - if you're really serious about figuring out the problem yourself, you have to have the tools, additional mac even if diagnostic fails, HDs, extra RAM, When I start my Mac each morning, I push the power button, then head to the kitchen to make coffee, fully expecting everything to work as it should.
